The Calm Before

March is really the calm before the storm, metaphorically of course. In literal reality it’s usually just a storm. A big, muddy, cruddy storm. But, metaphorically…it is quite the opposite.

This is really my last chance to dig in a little before the snow melts, the greenhouses fire up, the crew arrives, and the seeds start to sprout. This is really the last moments of not worrying about all the crops, how they are doing, how will we sell them and how the crew is doing. This is the last window of respite.

But once the season takes off, I can take another calm from another storm. another respite. One I look forward to actually. Once the greenhouse starts up, marking the real start to the season, I can lose track of the world and the goings on outside of my little (relatively) veggie mission. I’ll can stay focused, because I have to, on those plants, on the farmers markets, on the weather, and how the tractors are running. I’ll be worlds more concerned with the happiness of the crew than what is being said on the radio. I have the time now to tune out and tune in. But in a few short weeks, I’ll tune in and tune out. That makes sense, right? Let’s go with it.

Once the season starts, one finds oneself so tired all the time, you can’t even worry about anything you have no control over.

All this is to say, in the deep dive that is a farming season, I may not know what is going on out there in real life. I may not know what storm is brewing. So, if something really crazy happens…if Trudeau decides that Canada is going to annex Minnesota, someone please let me know, okay? Cause me and the crew will be blissfully putting our shoulders to the wheel out in the field. Then one day we’ll head down to market only to find the Royal Canadian Mounties on the border. “What?” I’ll say, “Has the whole world gone mad!? Also…can you annex Wisconsin please?”

Here is to the last sliver of rest for the season.
